Whisky tasting: the basics

If you were one of those who thought that only tasted the winethen this article is of interest to you. If you also love whisky, or if you are curious to learn more about it, don't miss this post.

Whisky is not for drinking, but for savouring. This drink is full of nuances that are not appreciated if you drink it in a hurry:

  • The colour indicates the degree of maturity, take a look at it.
  • If you turn to smell, you will notice the aromas coming out of the glass.
  • You can also wet your finger and rub it in the palm of your hand to feel the character of the drink.

Whisky is a drink known to the ancient Celts as the 'water of life'. Although not quite the whisky we know today, the distillate they produced was used to combat the cold Scottish temperatures.

This drink is a distillate of the fermented malt of certain cereals such as barley and rye. It can be divided into two groups:

  1. Single malt whisky or single malt whisky: are produced from water, yeast and malted barley.
  2. Blended whisky: is the blending of one or more whiskies. Although there are some award-winning whiskies, they tend to be of lower quality than single malt or single grain whiskies.

Tasting steps

If you want to fully appreciate the aromas and nuances of whisky, we recommend you to go to a tasting with experts. At HG Mallorca we advise you to taste and choose the best drinks for your business. Shall we get started?

  • The place: It is important that the space is bright and spacious, where other smells do not mix. If we have a white table, all the better, as this will allow us to appreciate the tones of the whisky.
  • Temperature: it is best to test it at room temperature and neatThe wine should be served undiluted with water and ice. It should never be served below 17 degrees.
  • The glass: the real vessel is the tulip-shaped glass, also known as the Glencairn. What we achieve by using it is to concentrate the aroma at the top of the glass.
  • The service: a small amount is poured into the glass and accompanied by a glass of water to cleanse the palate between tastings.

After the visual phase comes the olfactory phase, where we are transported back to the origins of this very special drink.

During a whisky tasting We can appreciate aromas of peat, iodine, seaweed, smoke, salt... Even pepper, spices, leaves, grass... Depending on the Scottish soil in which it was obtained, the drink will give us different sensations.

Are you still hungry for more? Whether you want to learn all about whisky, want to include it in your venue's menu or even want to organise your own tasting, do not hesitate to contact us.
